How I became I johnny's fan
Mar. 31st, 2014 10:23 pmSo I've been in the Johnny's fandom officially for two years now, and it's been a crazy ride in a good way. I was just thinking really hard on how I even got into the JE fandom in the first place, I got into the fandom on Youtube sort of. I watched a drama called one pound gospel and I've seen that one a few times, one of the actor's name is Yamada Ryosuke where he plays the gym owner's son. I looked him up because I thought he was kind of cute and I found out he was in this group called Hey! Say! JUMP. So I had that info in the back of my mind for a while. I remember the video that turned me into a fan but I don't remember what it was related to that I was watching before then. The first JE video that I watched and recognized as a JE video was the Arigatou sekai no doko ni itemo PV by Hey! Say! JUMP and I think sub-consciously I knew that this was the group Yamada was in, but it only hit me when I went back and checked. That video blew my mind because first off, I was not into J-Pop at the time, actually I very music disliked J-Pop I was a firm believer that J-Rock was just better and I also very much liked K-pop. Seeing Arigatou sekai no doko ni itemo was the turning point in my life because I loved the PV, I thought all of the boys were pretty darn attractive and I wanted all of their outfits. The next day I showed the song to my friend who was not into any type of asian fandom at all, but she listened to me. After that I had to know more about these boys, I soon discovered that this fandom wasn't like K-pop and J-rock at all because I could barely find anything on Youtube, it was an absolute nightmare, and there weren't many fans posting videos about Johnny's on Youtube either, but then I found this one facebook group called JETalk and I spoke with the ladies on this group for a while, about a year and got to know just about all of the groups with them. I grew as a fan while talking to them about their favorite group and what made them their favorite. I remember not liking Kanjani8 almost at all when I first got into them, I thought their music style was so foreign and weird, but now I have to say they are one of my favorite groups. I love all seven of those dorks to the end of the earth. One of the biggest things about me entering the JE fandom was also me exiting the K-pop fandom, I haven't considered myself an actual K-pop fan for over a year and a half. When I first got into the JE fandom I had this balance between K-pop and JE, but the one thing I started realizing is that K-pop fans could be really mean to me when it came to me liking Johnny's and J-pop idols. K-pop fans know this is true, if you so much as insult someone's bias's hair, you'll get ten different comments within two minutes sending death threats or unkind messages telling you how perfect their Oppa is and how you are obviously wrong because Oppa does no wrong. Then, I've never been the one to really comment about J-pop on K-pop videos cause I find that rude, it's two different genres, but when I was on the rare Youtube videos that related to Johnny's or JE I saw lots and lots of fighting and just K-pop fans that went out of their way to insult and be mean J-pop fans and that's the reason I fell out of the K-pop fandom, it left an extremely bad taste in my mouth. I don't respond well to mean people in real life, I'm not taking that from the internet as well. I do recognize that I still think K-pop music is catchy but it's never going on my Ipod ever again because I won't listen to it, it was a genre just gathering dust before I deleted it.
Anyways, before I get to far off track again. JE is the first fandom that I've spent so much money on, I never bought any K-pop or J-rock posters and CDs. Johnny's was the first fandom I committed to so much that I had to start buying their stuff. And how I do love their stuff! I bought their CDs which is an accomplishment for me because I own zero J-rock and K-pop CDs I don't know but I feel like that's my actions telling me where my love really lies. My parents even know the term Johnny's now, which is good because the only used to know GACKT. He was my one and only for three years straight! I started small with merchandise and all of that though. I bought magazine clippings and used those as substitute posters, I printed out pictures on photo paper, which made my dad angry because I was wasting his ink XD My fandom beginnings weren't glorious or super interesting but I love this fandom so that's ok haha.
